Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school building is close to a hundred years old and in need of a makeover. That is why the students decided to create areas of beauty through out the whole building. They decided on mosaics because of their experience in a pervious project, that they enjoyed immensely .

Our students are mostly inner city Latino's in the Bronx New York.

They all attend a kindergarten to grade 5 elementary school. Our community is mostly of Mexican decent with some Caribbean and some Central American and South American families. Most of our students are English Language Learners and 91% of them are below the poverty rate.

My Project

Over the past few years our school has realized the important connection between the Arts and student engagement in all curriculum areas. We have collected data that indicates that that the students produce far better and more rigorous products when we incorporate the Arts into the instruction. This is why we are requesting assorted color glass tiles, nippers and adhesive so that the students can create beautiful mosaics that will be permanently displayed throughout our school building. Each mosaic will have a curriculum connection that will require the students to conduct prior research in groups before actually installing the mosaic.

By donating to our project you will be providing our students opportunity for creative expression and you will also be providing real world problem solving practice that they can use at a later time.

The project will also serve as a reminder of what students can do and create when they work collaboratively and with a real world purpose.
