My Students

Do you remember the feeling of holding a paint brush in your hand and creating your own masterpiece? My students have the opportunity to create such a work to hang on the walls of their homes for years to come.

My students live in a suburban community in Utah.

They attend public schools in one of the more meagerly funded states in the US. While our numbers go up each year, our funding has been going down and class sizes have risen. I am applying for materials for the entire second grade in our school, not just my class.

My Project

I would like to help my students create a butterfly masterpiece, developing art concepts while also studying the life cycles of animals. During this unit I bring in a real artist who works with the students for an entire day. She coaches them on how to consider size and shape. They draw their own butterfly, then with a little help transfer it onto a 16 x 20 canvas. She then helps them learn techniques in painting and decorating the butterflies. We end the project with a few well placed black lines by our artist to give it the finished look. Each butterfly looks unique and is a great blend of their work with a few finishing touches. I am asking for funding only to pay for the canvases we will use for our final product.

Our second grade has done this project for several years and it is often considered a highlight of the year.

With funding cuts, this can no longer come out of our school's budget. I would love to give this year's students a chance to create their masterpiece.
