My Students

My school was originally created by a group of parents unhappy with the public school options in their neighborhood. We strive to maintain a racial, ethnic, and economic mix because we believe that integration and equal access benefit everyone. It is now part of a diversity pilot project in NYC and remains committed to making progressive education accessible to all.

This year, I will be teaching first grade for the first time.

My 24 first-graders are a unique cohort because many of them have not been in a school building for the last year and a half. They will be learning the ABCs at the same time they are learning how to be in school. All the kids returning to classrooms this fall will present with a wide range of developmental needs, and I want my classroom to be flexible enough to meet them where they're at!

My Project

As we think about discussing big ideas with little people, we consider age-appropriate language so that our students or children can grasp the concepts we’re introducing and incorporate these ideas and language into their own thinking and conversation. These beautiful books will help engage our first graders in these big ideas in language they can understand. This project is a mix of books that align with the guiding principles of the Black Lives Matter Movement as well as rich books that will promote a healthy reading life. A diverse and inclusive library where children see themselves represented is so very important in any classroom.
