Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The classes are in English Language Arts in an alternative high school in a Puerto Rican neighborhood of Chicago. The students are displaced from the Chicago Public Schools due to inadequate resources and the criminalization of students as they enter school. We provide a safe, supportive space for marginalized high school students.

Reinforcing community building with the use of a African and Puerto Rican music, these instruments will be used to define the meaning of a village and supportive environments.

The various percussion instruments are identified in many cultures around the world, specifically African and Puerto Rican, which is our student population. The instruments will be used during English Language Arts courses as a method of community building in the classroom and its relationship to academic achievement and the greater society. The instruments will assist students in building a common language of which to work from in their daily exercises. Yes, it does sound hippie-ish, but the students are audio and visual learners. Thus, we want to embrace the diversity of learning in our school.

As a part of their cultural literacy, it is important for students to embrace their cultural heritage and how it relates to literacy. Using oral language connected to music will empower students to collective work together musically and literally.
