Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The bear curriculum supports students’ social emotional and literacy learning, as they excitedly anticipate the arrival of the bears, writing letters to them and thinking about what the bears will need to feel safe in the classroom. After the bears have arrived, the children care for them. They write bear journals expressing their bears’ (and their own) thoughts, feelings and dreams about their experiences at school. Our school has a history of using the Bear Curriculum created by the Emotional Responsive Program at Bank Street College of Education as an adjunct to our project-based curriculum pedagogy. In addition to writing about them, the students learn to sew to make clothes and carriers for their bears.
