Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a fifth grade class at a low-performance school in the South Bronx section of New York City (P.S. 43x). Our school has been cited as a School In Need of Improvement Year 2 (SINI 2). One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch. My classroom has a "Gathering Area" where students listen to me read stories, and they enjoy sitting on an "Author's Chair" to share their own stories. Very often I conduct mini-lessons, whole lessons, and conferences in our gathering area. Also, students enjoy to read independently in this area. Fortunately, a donor purchased a rug for my classroom. I am grateful; however, not all of my 27 students fit on the rug, and my overweight and older students do not like sitting on a rug. Believe it or not, these physical differences sometimes create classroom management challenges for me. I have three students that are overweight and two students that are overage (I have teenage students in my class). I would love to situate bean bags and/or floor pillows so that these students can sit comfortably in the gathering area. I'm sure they will be more focused, motivated, and eager to learn information they need in order to feel successful. This is very important because many students are reading below grade level. I want to provide them with a safe, nurturing environment where they will feel comfortable to learn. Also, they will feel as if they are part of the classroom community regardless to their size and/or age. These children live in an impoverished neighborhood. Many live in shelters or overcrowded apartments where comfort is not available. They seek this feeling at school, where they do most of their learning. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
