My Students

My students are 4th graders in a New York City public school. They are in a dual-language program where they are learning in both French and English.

Half of the students speak English at home, and half of the students speak French at home, but in school they each spend every second day in each language.

They spend one day in an English classroom, then one day in a French classroom, and then they return to the English classroom.

I have about 50 students each year divided between the two rooms, and I work with a collaborating teacher. These supplies would be used in both classrooms.

My Project

Students will be using these bean bags in a comfortable reading nook.

Comfort is absolutely integral to helping students develop a love of reading.

Providing them with an environment that in conducive to reading helps them avoid distractions, build stamina, and concentrate on the book. Getting out of hard, upright chairs is important for many students who prefer prone positions or softer seating. Bean bag chairs provide a comfortable alternative to more typical classroom seating.

Students will be able to use these bean bag chairs on a daily basis during our classroom reading time. They'll be able to "lounge" in both of their classrooms while reading.
