This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach seven sections of physics and have 220 students. My school is located in an urban area and has 2500 students in it. Our school is the oldest one in the city.

My students are a diverse mix of low and high income urban students.

They represent many ethnic and racial groups. I also teach a wide array of classes.

I teach general physics, honors physics, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Physics. The students all love applied science and hands-on activities.

My Project

My students love doing experiments in thermodynamics. We need to replace many chipped and broken beakers that students have used over the past years. These beakers will be used in experiments in fluid and thermodynamics. For example, I always use the beakers to melt ice and boil water in examining States of Matter. I also use the beakers under a bunsen burner to have the students measure the specific heat capacity of an unknown metal. Students will also use beakers in an experiment to measure buoyant force using archimedes principle and a triple beam balance. In addition to these three experiments, beakers are used in internal assessment experiments, where students design their own projects. For example, this year a student is measuring the effect of temperature on magnetic field strength, and is controlling the temperature by using a water in a beaker. Beakers are a staple of the experiments in physics and will be heavily used in years to come by many students.
