This project will support a suburban public school district with a diverse population and a wide range of needs. We continue to look for innovative ways to connect with the children and families in this community, however many families struggle to make their means on a daily basis, with a large population of homeless.
Due to economic struggles, this further impacts the mental health of students, their families, and the community as a whole.
Our school district has one of the leading rates for students requiring crisis mental health services resulting in the need to transport students to local hospitals due to significant mental health needs.
To further strengthen the school community, build academic motivation, provide introductory exposure to possible future career goals, and strengthen students' self-esteem, I am initiating a new school Cosmetology Club. When I presented this club idea to one of my students, their response was, “That [club] would actually make me want to come to school.”
However, because the focus is cosmetology, in a low-income community, I am reaching out in search of basic cosmetology materials that can help support this community and the children we care for. By supporting this initiative, you will be making an impact on student mental health, which then impacts academic success, and further impacts positive career goals for the children in our community.
