My Students

"Not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say." Imagine journeying through life without the means to communicate with the world around you. This is, unfortunately,​ the case for many of the students I am blessed to work with on a daily basis. I serve as a speech-language pathologist at a developmental preschool in a low-socioeconomic area located near Indianapolis, IN.

Every student I assist presents with a unique set of strengths and I feel it is my job to build off his or her strengths.

The students I am surrounded by daily have a variety of disabilities ranging from Down syndrome to severe cognitive disabilities, to all types of autism. While the students exhibit their own set of challenges, the joy they bring to me on a daily basis far outweighs any negatives. I am grateful to be given the opportunity to make even the slightest impact on the lives of each one of my students.

My Project

Many of my students are non-verbal and/or are unable to communicate effectively due to the disabilities they present with. With increasing high-tech options available, alternate means for communication are becoming extremely popular within the special needs population. Sadly, most health insurance companies do not cover high-tech communication devices, such as iPads or tablets; therefore, families are left to fund these on their own. And they are not cheap.

With providing my students the opportunity to trial different communication software on an iPad, you are allowing me to prove to insurance companies and the school district that these children NEED these devices to develop language and communication.

I am not able to do that as I do not have consistent/daily access to an iPad to try with more than one student at a time. With your help, you are giving my students the potential to have a VOICE they may never have otherwise. Think about how much you speak on a daily basis and how hard it would be to go through life without that ability. You can make a difference. You can be the WHY to how they found their voice.
