My Students

My class is a self-contained class of five students with multiple disabilities. These students range in age from 14 to 19 years old and they represent multicultural and diverse backgrounds. These students are nonverbal and receive intensive modifications to meet their goals.

The primary handicapping condition of being intellectually disabled is compounded by various other health conditions, such as seizure disorders.

These students require direct intensive supported instruction. They receive total care for self-help needs. These students each have a vision impairment and are limited in the areas of fine and gross motor skills.

My classroom is a bright and happy, interactive room filled with five students eager to interact with teachers and staff. My classroom is vibrant, filled with engaging visual schedules, and picture supports.

My Project

A classroom overflowing with books is a reason for my students to smile. Students with significant cognitive disabilities who have no words, signs, or symbolic communication benefit from books. In my classroom, I use books to develop intentional communication with symbols and voice output communication systems. Books become tools to pair words and phrases with visual and tactile symbols to reach non-verbal learners and give them a voice.

A classroom filled with books will me to better reach mastery of every student's goals.

Read-aloud time in my classroom is a tool for my students, not only to listen to a story, but to improve comprehension and communication.
