My Students

"If it doesn't make the world better - don't do it." I love this quote from the Kid President, and it is a philosophy that I try to apply daily in my kindergarten class.

Kindergartners are awesome, and I have had the good fortune to teach them for over 10 years!

I began my teaching career in Arizona, where I taught full-day kindergarten at low income schools in a small town and in Phoenix. Upon moving back to my home state of Montana, I worked in higher education for several years. I was anxious for the opportunity to be back in the elementary classroom, and jumped at the chance to be one of the first full-day kindergarten teachers when our district adopted the full-day kindergarten initiative. I have absolutely loved watching the evolution of teaching kindergarten, and have received grants that have allowed me to infuse technology into my classroom. I use a balance of traditional learning techniques, technology and play to provide a rich experience for my kindergartners. We have fun every day, and I am constantly amazed by what they can create using their imaginations and the digital tools available to them. I have a great job!

My Project

The funding I am requesting is to support becoming a National Board Certified Teacher. As I mentioned above, I have taught kindergarten for over 10 years, and I feel confident in my abilities to teach young children. However, I strive to continue to be better - to challenge myself, motivate my colleagues, and become a better educator for my students. National Board Certification is the highest mark of professional accomplishment for a teacher. Pursuing National Board Certification is an arduous process that will provide a framework for reflecting on my teaching practices and how they contribute to student success. The process of becoming certified will allow me to hone my skills as a teacher, and collaborate alongside other teaching professionals who are serious about becoming better at what they do. Spending time in this process and with these educators will be an opportunity for me to become better and what I do, and to share what I learn about best practices with others!

Becoming a National Board Certified Teacher is a process that will take time, great effort and hard work.

I wouldn't embark upon this journey if I didn't think it would have a phenomenal positive impact on my students. My intent for pursuing National Board Certification is to reflect on my teaching, learn from the process and become a better teacher. This all leads to greater student success - I want to be the best teacher I can be, because these kids deserve the very best!
