My Project

I am a Social Worker at one of the largest specialized high schools in Brooklyn, NY. I provide social-emotional support to students who require assistance in learning how to process and manage their emotions. The students that I provide counseling to are extremely motivated, driven, and competitive. I have observed that highly intelligent students benefit from having a “refuge”- a safe space to decompress and relax.

I am interested in creating a "safe space” that helps to prepare young people for our diverse world by giving them a sense of belonging and support so that they can face life’s challenges in healthy ways.

I want a space where students can BE PRESENT, SAFE AND CALM. I support the student body at my school which is an inclusive and diverse community of Black/Brown students, students who identify as LGBTQIA+ and students who have experienced trauma. I identify and address various emotional, mental, and social challenges students face which helps students process trauma, build healthy coping skills, and resolve conflicts in healthy ways.

The advantage of having a particular "safe space" is that students have a clear understanding of where to go when they need help. When students know that there is a safe space to help them, it reinforces a culture of safety and security.

The sofa, lamp, and other items that I have requested will create an environment `where students can relax and recharge; a judgment-free zone where students can let their guard down and be themselves. In this "safe space". I want students to learn how to confront challenges through emotional regulation and develop resilience which will help them help them become productive adults.
