Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Science is a subject that is constantly changing. Many of the newer advances in science are not in any textbook and can not be easily described through writing. Most of my students receive free lunch, and come in with very low skills, including about 30% of our students receiving special education services. Energy is a major concern around the world. By creating their own solar cars, students will understand the current ideas about energy in a meaningful and interactive way.

We are doing a unit on energy and alternative energy sources. We want students to have hands on experience with alternative energy sources, such as hydrogen fuel and solar energy. Currently, transportation is a major consumer of fossil fuels. Students will understand that alternative fuel sources are viable sources of energy to power our cars, buses, trains, and planes. We want students to be educated in the alternative energy sources that their generation will be utilizing. By making their own solar cells they will experience this technology first hand and gain valuable insight about alternative fuel sources.

At the end of our semester, we want to hold an alternative energy car race. The students will be designing their own cars based on basic physics principles (friction, drag, aerodynamics). The students will also understand how solar energy and hydrogen fuel cells work to move their cars. Our goal as a science department is to have our students be well versed in the scientific method. Hands on experience with making their own procedures for building their cars, forming their own hypotheses about how the design will affect the speed of the car, and analyzing their data will help to cement the scientific method as a cornerstone of science and engineering. Using relevant science and sparking an interest in science in our students will help our students to thrive as they continue on to college.

Alternative energy is an important topic for the future of our planet. You will be giving these young minds a chance to experience and understand energy forms that may be critical for our future. Designing their own solar car will give them an advantage when they are in college because they will understand the new technologies that exist in Chemistry.
