Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Staten Island elementary school servicing a multicultural population of students from varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Music and the arts have been a powerful unifier in our school.
"Everyone should be able to make music; it's the cosmic dance." - Harold & Maude
My students are eager to participate in the arts, and that is a big focus in our building. Our children demonstrate all kinds of talents beyond their academics, and we try our best to offer as many extracurricular activities as part of a well-rounded education.
My Project
My students always enjoy making fun of me for smacking and banging my guitar around, playing it more like a percussion instrument, until it's cracked in several different places. And alas, it's happened again.
My music classes and chorus would benefit greatly from a new guitar to sing with that sounds as good as the kids' deserve it to.
Having a beautiful-sounding instrument to accompany the children's voices is going to inspire and motivate them to perform their best.
Due to the pandemic, we don't have access to the auditorium and use of the piano, so this school year more than ever before, a new guitar would really be "instrumental" (pun intended) to our music program.
