My Students

Our school serves students in grades ETK-6. We are a Title I public school from the inner-city. More than 95% of our students are on the federal free meal plan. Most of our students get dropped off and arrive at school at 7:30 AM and continue to stay at school until 6:00 PM. In other words, our school is their home away from home.

I work with energetic and motivated second graders who are eager to learn.

I would love to have the opportunity to create an environment that empowers my students to reach their full potential as scholars and citizens of the 21st-century.

My Project

According to recent study published by Pediatrics, obesity rates among children have jumped substantially since COVID-19 pandemic. Experts worry the excess weight will be a continuing problem for these children. The study noted that children of color and of low-income background were especially impacted.

Studies indicate that children aged 5 years and older should do at least one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity on top of several hours of light physical activity each day.

And at least three days a week, this should include activities that strengthen muscles and bones. In short, physical activity is vital more than ever before for young children’s health and development.

My project is requested for hula hoops, one per student to use in class, on the playground, and at home. The hoops are used to engage children in a variety of activities that encourage the development of spatial awareness; eye-hand coordination, and motor development. But more importantly, the hoops will allow my students to meet the physical activity requirements needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle- while having fun! Additionally, with something as versatile hula hoops, the potential activities are endless, ensuring that students of all interests will be able to find an activity that appeals to them.
