My Students

Many of my students experience extreme poverty. Many have difficulty coming to school for complex reasons often out of the child's control. I serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and various learning disabilities.

The typical students in my class struggle with basic math and reading skills.

This year, I had over a third of my class receiving special services. I have 30 fourth graders, and 12 of these students needed additional support services. Because my students have complex and difficult lives, I need to provide emotional and physical comfort and support to help them learn and grow. Six hours a day is long when a young person is struggling with overwhelming problems.

I love these students. I love the fact I am the rock in their lives. I am here for them when so much in their lives are in transition and turmoil. When these students are given love, empathy, and structure, they grow. It is their growth that gives me the hope to face the world every day.

My Project

These materials will be used in a calming corner. A calming corner is a small, designated space located within a classroom.

The purpose of my calming corner is to help support self-regulation while keeping students in the classroom if they need a break from instruction time or group activity, to deal with their feelings.

Many of my students do not have a toolbox full of calming strategies they know to use. This space will give my student's a safe space and provide an opportunity to practice calming strategies. My students will be using these tools using pre-taught strategies for a short amount of time.
