Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The best way to learn is to explore. What better way to learn fractions than to be able to manipulate them and make discoveries?

My students are eager to learn.

They love to soak up new knowledge. However, they are faced with obstacles that they have to overcome. First, the income level at my school is very low. Most students are on free or reduced lunch. Also, many of them come from single parent homes who are working multiple jobs. This means that they do not get a lot of help at home with difficult concepts like fractions. As their teacher, I want to make sure they have all of the opportunities possible to help them be successful. Also, fractions is a concept that they will continually build on throughout their years in school. I want them to fully grasp the concepts now, so that they will be able to be more successful in later years.

My Project

This is one of the years where the students learn a lot of new material. One of those concepts is fractions. We would use these manipulatives to better understand fractions. We can find equivalent fractions, compare fractions, and add and subtract fractions. It makes the concepts much easier when each student can have a set in front of them. This way they are able to move them around, compare them side-by-side, etc. They can also easily understand complicated concepts like ordering fractions. The fraction bars, tiles, and circles are great in stations too. They can continue to practice the concepts throughout the year. My goal is for them to have a solid foundation when they go to fifth grade and then middle school. The concept of fractions will continue to build, so I want them to be solid when they leave my class. The best way to learn is to have a hands-on experience.

As a teacher, I want my students to have every possible opportunity to be successful.

Donors like you make that possible. Together we can help students with concepts that are difficult and new. Thank you for taking the time to read about our class project. We appreciate you!
