Broadway in New York City is a magical place. Experiencing the hustle bustle around the theaters, seeing the flashing marquees announcing the play and sitting down in the beautiful theaters to be carried off into a world where your imagination can soar is an experience of a lifetime. For one hundred eighty-five 5th graders, many of whom come from low-income families and have had few opportunities to leave their neighborhood, a full scale Broadway production and lunch out in Manhattan is a first time life opportunity that will play a major role in their academics and scholastic advancement. This activity is a reward for their hard work and effort throughout the school year.

Although, sponsors and various school fundraisers have paid for their tickets and meals, the students have no means of transportation. In the past, the Parent Teacher Association has paid the students’ transportation but due to drastic cuts in the school budget, they are unable to do so this year. However, we are not deterred by this and realize that this just means we, as a school, will have to work harder to make this trip a reality for our students. Our school is a Title I school which means many of our students come from low-income families and over 64% of them qualify for free lunch. The school’s administration and staff including myself are determined to broaden our students’ horizon because many of their life experiences are within their surrounding area.

Through your generous donation – any amount is appreciated – you will be helping our 5th graders experience the Broadway magic. Seeing that Broadway has so much rich culture, this memory that you will help make possible will inspire the students to use more of their imagination and allow them to aspire to greater heights. As they are traveling to the city on the coach bus, which you provided for, they will enjoy the breathtaking views of Manhattan’s skyline. During lunch, out at a fancy restaurant they will get to practice their etiquette skills and build confidence while ordering food. But the most magic for them will be at the Broadway play. They will discover that producing a Broadway play is much more than just a script for actors to perform. As the curtains come to a close, a whole new world has been opened to them as they will realize all the different aspects of a stage production – set and costume design, musical direction, choreography, lighting and stage design, and so forth. If their hearts so desire, they may want to pursue an art career of a certain field, and you would have helped make that happen!

If your heart is in your dreams No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star Words sung beautifully by Louis Armstrong. Our 5th graders’ wish is to be part of the Broadway magic, and you can make that into a reality since it is only a bus stop away.
