My Project

I have been given the opportunity to teach 8th-grade English language arts this year. I'm excited to have my former students from 6th grade again! I want to introduce my students to one of the classics I read as an 8th grader, "To Kill A Mockingbird."

I want to use "To Kill A Mockingbird" to help my students become familiar with the social climate of the South during the 1930s, and Harper Lee's unique depiction of it will greatly enrich my students' understanding of this time.

I am requesting a class set of the "To Kill A Mockingbird" chapter books and graphic novels because I will be teaching different reading levels. I will use the chapter books for my advanced and core ELA classes. I will use the graphic novels for my basic ELA classes.

I have used graphic novels in place of chapter books for my basic classes because my students who struggle with reading are not intimidated by graphic novels. Graphic novels give them the same opportunity to experience these classics alongside their classmates in other classes.

I have several activities I want to do with my students while we read this book. The activity I'm looking forward to the most is an activity I did when I was in middle school, recreating Tom's trial before the verdict with some students being the jury. This activity will be a great opportunity for my students to work on their public speaking and persuasive writing skills.
