My Students

Our school is close to two military bases and many of my kids are the children of deployed military personnel. The school is urban and old. We do not qualify for Title I but 68% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students are here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. My students have limited access to libraries, books and technology outside of school. Right now, they are often bullied because they do not have the financial support that other students have.

Most of my students do not have funds for frills like books or recreational activities.

They want to participate in our Battle of the Books but they need copies of the books so they can read them.

My Project

I am a librarian. I want to encourage reading and Battle of the Books is the ticket.

My students see other kids reading and having fun during Battle of the Books but they cannot participate because they do not have copies of the books.

I am requesting asking for book tape to reinforce the spines and copies of 30 different books including A Dragon's Guide to the Care and Feeding of Humans and Skinnybones. I plan to read some of the longer books during our Lunch in the Library read-aloud time. I will book talk the other books and this will increase interest in the Battle of the Books program. Then my students will select books to read. They will quiz each other on the questions, form teams and then participate in an all-school competition to find the team which will represent our school is the cross district competition. My students do not have the money to purchase their own individual copies of the books but if they had access to the books in the library they would have a chance to participate.
