Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a public Kindergarten through eighth-grade school in a high-poverty, urban community in New Jersey. They love music class and are great musicians. Even though we don't have a budget for new materials, we find creative ways to make music together.

My biggest out-of-pocket expense as a teacher is AA batteries that we use to power our electronic keyboards.

Although our keyboards come with plugs, we have limited outlets and I generally end up buying batteries several times a month to keep all my students on functioning instruments.

My Project

Thanks to the generosity of the DonorsChoose community, our middle school music program offers a piano class. My students love to play our keyboards and often come before and after school to get extra playing time. We are running high on enthusiasm but low on batteries!

I often find myself purchasing batteries myself so each student can have a functioning keyboard during music class.

Although these keyboards do have cords, we simply can't plug them all in due to outlet limitations in our old building. Having these batteries plus a rechargeable battery station means we would avoid this issue altogether.
