Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Title I school with almost all of my students qualifying for free lunch. Many of my student-athletes struggle academically therefore every weekday from September through June, my students come to study hall from 3-4pm and then we head out to practice or play games.

My students are primarily from immigrant families from the Dominican Republic.

Almost all of them qualify for free lunch and many are English Language Learners. My students care a lot about getting to college and starting a career that can support their family. They are passionate about baseball and it is a tremendous motivator for them both in school and on the field. My school is an unscreened public school in Washington Heights. We have about 350 students in our High School. Our school is considered to be one of the top unscreened High Schools in New York city. That is, our students do not have to take a test or any other entrance requirement to be enrolled here, they simply apply. We have an amazing and hardworking faculty who regularly stay after hours to support our students, and our sports program's goal is to support their hard work as much as possible.

My Project

My students need baseball bats to play games during the season. The bats are composite and therefore will last us the entire season without breaking unlike similarly expensive wood bats. They also need a first baseman's mitt which is a specialty mitt and typically too expensive for one student to spend their own money on.

This project will allow my students to not have to worry about spending their own money on bats and a first baseman's mitt.

Since the bats will not break we don't have to worry about buying new bats or running out of bats during the season.
