Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The best learning happens when students are engaged in something challenging and fun. Working with clay, sculpting and creating three dimensional objects from their imaginations presents the kind of challenge that supports students' intellectual growth and achievement.

Our Pre-K to 4th grade elementary school is located in an ethnically diverse, low income, inner city neighborhood in the Northeast.

Students are accustomed to having less and doing without. Many of our students are very talented but families can't afford private art lessons and art-camp in the summer. So to be artistically successful, my students need a top notch public school art education program. A ceramics program with professional tools and materials will give these children an educational experience that can change their lives and outlooks on life.

My Project

I am asking for forty-eight handled bats to hold in-process ceramic pieces and twelve decorating wheels for hands-free detailing and glazing. Each student will hand build his/her clay piece using one of the handled bats as a base. When class is over they will cover their piece with plastic wrap and place it on a shelf, undisturbed on the bat, until their next ceramics class. When ready, students will place their bisque-fired piece on one of the decorating wheels. (A decorating wheel is like a small Lazy Susan). Turning the wheel as they go, students carefully "paint" on their choice of glazes. Here is a short list of projects my students can create, using the decorating wheels: gargoyle face mugs (4) pinch pot bells (3), pinch pot animals (2-4) and pinch pot fish (K-2). When students create with clay they learn patience. They learn that it is important to follow rules, and they experience that sense of accomplishment that comes from turning an idea into an object made with one's own two hands.

"Low-income students who had arts-rich experiences in high schools were more than three times as likely to earn a B.A.

as low-income students without those experiences....low-income high school students who earned few or no arts credits were five times more likely not to graduate from high school than low-income students who earned many arts credits." Prepared Remarks of U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on the Report, "Arts Education in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools: 2009-10"
