Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a mix of personalities. Some are shy and others are gregarious. Some are serious and some are goofy. They are still testing out their personas, so to speak, but they are a tough bunch. Maybe they have to be since we are located in the South Bronx. We are a Title I school in a not yet gentrified area. It is unfortunate that our students have to walk past addicts and discarded drug paraphernalia on their way to school.

Our school provides students with a sanctuary that allows them to grow and learn.

We are a 6th-12th grade school, so we have the opportunity to watch these students grow from children to young adults. Since we are a relatively small school, we get to know the students, their siblings, and their families. There is a good sense of community at our school.

My Project

After an absence of more than a year of team sports due to Covid, our students are eager to get back on the court and the field to play. We will need basketballs for our basketball team, volleyballs for our volleyball team, and soccer balls for our soccer team, along with knee pads and appropriate shoes for students who do not have them.

School sports promote physical health during a key point in our students' development.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that students who participate in high school sports are less likely to engage in activities that could have a negative impact on their health, such as smoking and drinking. Furthermore, they found that sports participation reduces the chance of obesity or type 2 diabetes, which is generally associated with a lack of physical activity.

In addition to physical health, sports participation also promotes mental wellness. By participating in sports, students not only gain an outlet to relieve that stress, but also to improve their mental health overall.
