My Students

My basketball team is a cohort of diverse, intelligent, and hardworking students from around the New York City Metropolitan area. Our school is a selective, public, college preparatory school with a focus on science, math, and engineering that provides a challenging academic experience that prepares students for careers in science, math, and engineering.

As a teacher in a low income school, I see the challenges students are faced with both inside and outside of the classroom.

Many of our students are the first in their families to attend school, are from non-English speaking families, and receive free or reduced rate lunch and transportation fares based on their socioeconomic status.

Due to budget cuts, our students don't have or are forced to use outdated equipment which in-turn restricts their abilities to perform to their maximum potential. Regardless of these challenges, attendance is very high and we have an extremely high college attendance rate. Many of our players also use this as an opportunity to increase their chances into college and to provide an outlet for when times get challenging in their personal and school lives.

My Project

This project was put in place to help us obtain new jerseys. Our current jerseys are worn out, some parts are missing, and we don't have enough for the entire team! Not all of the boys can afford to get new jerseys, which is why we are working together to create this project. To comply with regulations, the team will need reversible jerseys and shorts to play in.

By obtaining these resources, our students will feel more empowered to represent our school as uniforms provide a sense of belonging and pride!

These uniforms are also necessary in identifying our team during competition events and help our students be recognized within our community when they get to wear their athletics outfits on Fridays during pride day!

For future use, we hope to break the boundaries that uniforms can sometimes make when families cannot obtain them themselves. This allows our students to focus on the game and developing their skill!

Also, the team needs basic medical supplies, as it is a contact sport and accidents do happen. They need things like bandages and wraps, ice packs, hand sanitizer (basketball players touch the bottom of their shoes a lot). Help us keep our revitalized team safe!
