My Students

Our school is in a small town located in rural central Maine. Students come from very low socio-economic backgrounds. Parents and the community are very supportive of our school and do all they can to help. However, because of the economics of our area, funding for projects is somewhat limited.

Our students come to school each day and put forth an effort that is truly amazing.

Our students are involved with numerous school activities as well as participating in whatever the community is sponsoring at any given time. No matter what the limitations our students face, they continue to be involved and always show appreciation.

My Project

Our middle school population is approximately 250 students. Our gymnasium only has 2 baskets that serve 4 school basketball teams, and numerous recreational teams as well as our physical education classes.

Basketball is extremely popular in our community.

During the winter months, our gym is used seven days a week! Most of our teams consist of about 15 players sharing two baskets.

When I watch or coach our teams, I think how much more we could do with an extra basket. With a portable basket, we could use it during the winter season, but also take it outside in the summer for more opportunities.
