Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The learning needs of my students has become complicated because of the experiences they bring to school. This creates the need for different approaches to instruction and high interest reading material to capture and sustain their learning throughout the school day.

Despite the daily challenges of violence and crime in Chicago, my students come to school prepared to learn in an environment tailored to their learning needs.

Approximately 10% of my student population receives special education services. Ninety-four percent are considered low-income and receive free or reduced-price meals at school throughout the day. The student population is 84% Hispanic and 16% African American.

My Project

In small collaborative reading/learning groups, my students will read Black and White by Paul Volponi, to create a habit of reading for information and enjoyment. I also want my students to define themselves as readers and regularly read material that reflects their interest.

Small collaborative learning groups allows students to develop problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills , all beneficial to life outside the classroom.

Using guided reading book discussion questions, students will read and share symbols and ideas that match their reality and experiences. Students will develop stamina to read longer with greater fluency, analyze text, gain critical thinking skills, analyze the choices they make and discuss remedies to unwise connections and thought patterns.

During teacher student conferences, students will write academic and behavioral goals. During our novel reflections academic reading needs of my students will be analyzed as well as clear up any misconceptions they have about the novel.
