My Students

When most people think of Brooklyn’s Coney Island, they think of its historic landmarks and summers on the beach and boardwalk. But for many students at my pre-K through 8th grade Title I school, life can be a daily struggle that is anything but a vacation.

One thing that has always served as a great motivator for my students is their love of the game of basketball.

That's why I am using a 4th - 8th grade intramural basketball league to teach my students leadership, teamwork, and discipline.

My Project

At my school, we created an intramural basketball league and clinic that emphasizes the learning of fundamental skills as well as improving teamwork and leadership abilities. Each day, we begin with select offensive and defensive drills before running and officiating five intramural games. At the end of every week, we recognize and celebrate key attributes such as leadership, sportsmanship, passing, hustle, and improvement.

We are providing our scholar-athletes with a first-class league, and we want to ensure that they have access to high-quality equipment to match.

It is our hope that these basketballs are just one step towards achieving that goal.
