My Students

Sports is a calling to many young African-American and Hispanic males in the inner city. At our school, we lack this component that provides them with the opportunity to develop essential skills for life.

We are a Title I school with no athletic extra curricular activities.

We are a performing arts school that has been open for ten years. Our students maintain an over 90% attendance rate and are very talented in all of their art forms, whether it is visual arts, instrumental music, drama, dance or vocal. While we have so much to offer in terms of the arts, we lack in the traditional extracurricular activities offered throughout the city's public school system.

My Project

We, as coaches, remember having the opportunity to participate in school based athletics. It helps instill discipline that can be applied to all aspects of life. Having a basketball team provides us with the gateway to reach our students beyond the classroom. Bringing relevance to students of this population is important. So that they can connect the lessons learned in basketball, something they identify with, to the importance of education. I am requesting 2 basketball scoring books, 3 basketballs, 1 sports pack, 2 whistles and a stopwatch to help us train a competitive team.

Statistics show that African-American and Hispanic males are destined for failure.

Our students want and deserve every chance to succeed. Presenting them with a means to defy these odds is our goal and basketball is our method.
