Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When it comes to the wonder of reading, Dr. Seuss said it best, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” But how do we make sure that every student has the opportunity to read, learn, and “go” all those amazing places that reading can take them?

My students are struggling readers who need the opportunity to become capable learners.

The kindergarten through third-grade students I work with are reading well below grade level. Having struggled with basic reading skills, they need intensive, targeted intervention to help them improve their reading, which is vital to their success in all academic areas.

To add to their reading challenges, my students live in a low-income neighborhood where they face numerous disadvantages. Unable to control what goes on outside of school, I try to make the most of their time with me by doing what I can do to maximize their learning. They need engaging literacy instruction and rich, meaningful learning that will help them overcome their challenges and experience that 'wonder of reading.'

My Project

These materials will support my intervention students' learning by allowing me to create literacy resources specific to their individual needs. With a wealth of printable resources available to teachers, having a printer, laminator, and related supplies will enable me to readily personalize my students' learning. I will be able to print various resources, such as templates, passages, word lists, games, task cards, flashcards, among many others, as well as resources that can support the digital resources we also use in the classroom.

Students will be more engaged as they interact with and practice the literacy skills and concepts we are learning.

Laminating the resources will not only help them to be durable and lasting, they can then be used with the dry erase markers as a means of supporting active participation during lessons as well as repeated practice. Being able to print in color also enables me to incorporate vivid, colorful images and fonts to help make the resources even more engaging for my students.
