My Students

I work in the South Bronx and I provide speech therapy to students who range from ages 5-10 years old and who have special needs, specifically autism. Many of my students are non-verbal or minimally verbal, and they face challenges everyday with communicating with peers and adults both at school and in their communities. They each have Individualized Education Plans (IEP's), which cater to their individual skills and needs, and allow them to receive services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. My students learn and grow each day at school and they are always appreciative of new materials and learning opportunities!

My Project

These basic supplies will be used to create a variety of speech and language activities that cater to each of my students within their learning environments. Specifically these materials are used to create visuals (i.e. pictures and sentence strips) that will help my students express themselves. Visuals are used throughout the school day and can be carried over to all environments. For example, I collaborate with teachers and I create visual aids that relate to what the students are learning in the classroom. In addition to this, I send home visuals to students' families so that the visuals can be used and carried over at home. My students will appreciate having these materials to aid in their communication skills!
