This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are English Language Learners in a Spanish developmental bilingual program, which means that they are exposed to listening and speaking in English, but learn Spanish reading and writing first. These students transition into English reading and writing in second grade. My students attend one of the largest public elementary schools in Wisconsin, with nearly 700 students, 98% of whom qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. As the second and third grade English as a Second Language Teacher, I help to bridge Spanish and English Literacy.

If you were to enter my classroom, you would hear students speaking primarily in Spanish, but as I enter the room students begin to shift to English!

They are bridging two languages to become future leaders in an ever-changing world and I will do all that I can to support them.

My Project

Most of my students come from low income families, who are struggling financially, and start the year off with limited to no school supplies. These school supplies will take the pressure off of families who are unable to provide them for their children.

These basic supplies will help my English Learners begin the year in a positive way.

The notebooks, folders, and pencils will motivate my students and engage them in their lessons. My English Learners will be excited to use these supplies to learn more and reach their goals. These school supplies will keep my students from feeling upset or embarrassed, which will create a positive classroom environment. The Kleenex, cleaning supplies and masks will help keep the classroom healthy.
