Basic Supplies for a Successful School Year!

My students need basic supplies to have a fantastic school year, such as: fans to keep cool, a basic vacuum to keep our room tidy, paper towels/napkins for snack time, sanitary products and paper.

My Students

Within the NYC Public school system is District 75. District 75 houses the highest needs special needs students and oftentimes, these students also fall into the highest needs economically disadvantaged category. Over 90% of my students fall into this category. We are a 12-month program, where students attend year-round to receive services.

My students are part of the largest school district in the country (the NYC DOE) and fall into the highest needs category.

For years, I have poured my own money into my classroom, but it is not enough! I have reached out to local community members and collected used and refurbished computers, but they do not meet the requirements to run modern software.

I teach grades K-8 and a total of 9 classes, a daily lunch club and a weekly positive behavior intervention club as a reward for students. All students would have access to these resources! That is why today, I am reaching out for global support to help our highest needs students get an equal chance to succeed! We truly need your assistance to level the playing field. Many students come from homes that do not have Internet access or technology, further increasing the achievement gap.

My Project

Each year, I start the school year by buying a new assortment of basic consumable supplies for my students. The challenging aspect is that, I am a technology teacher. So, instead of teaching a single classroom: I teach hundreds of students. Between lunch clubs, PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Clubs) and regular classes, I end up burning through A TON of supplies! Imagine how much hand sanitizer/tissues 120+ students use in a year! As the year goes on, I frequently make trips to the local pharmacy to replace tissues, hand sanitizer, paper products, etc.

With your help, my goal is to stock up on most of the supplies I would traditionally buy to help alleviate the cost of purchasing these supplies throughout the year.

I included 2 fans since I teach in an unairconditioned room and the temperatures get to be blisteringly hot during the first and last few months of school, a stick vacuum, cleaning/sanitary supplies to keep our room tidy, glade plugins to make our room smell nice after a day without air conditioning, (this is the reality of teaching in a city school!) paper supplies, markers, for projects and disposable plates/bowl/utensils for snack time.

I always contribute to my own projects because I want my students to have the same opportunities as anyone. Where you are born and where you live should not impact the quality of your education or access to basic supplies. This is why each year, regardless of funding; I end up purchasing all of the materials out-of-pocket.
