My Students

My urban school is 70% eligible for free or reduced price lunch. It is 95% children of color. 71% of students speak a language other than English at home. We welcome immigrants from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Tonga, Samoa, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Gambia, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Haiti. We also have a large African-American population, and a small number of Native students.

Despite our struggles with poverty and language barriers, the school culture is one of inclusivity, tolerance, and kindness.

We set high academic standards for every child, and through wrap-around services try to assure all needs are met. The sign board on our busy street reads: "Choose Love." We do.

My Project

Having a well-supplied classroom makes things run smoothly. Every day students warm up with paper and pen. Sometimes they erase! Sometimes they cut and paste, not on the computer, but with actual paper.

Having plenty of supplies available saves time and cuts down on stress.

Not every family can provide a well equipped back pack full of fresh paper and folders, colored pencils and pens. If these things are easily accessible in the classroom, there is no need for shame or worry. We can focus on learning activities rather than rounding up writing utensils from a friend -- time consuming and disruptive. Help me make my class a happy place, with a cornucopia of necessary supplies!
