My Students

I am an alumna of Teach For America, a national organization dedicated to providing teachers to schools with low test scores in poverty-stricken areas.

The goal is to send top college graduates to school districts that typically experience teacher shortages and are forced to rely upon permanent substitutes and other means to educate the children.

Despite researching the Arkansas Delta, and talking with other teachers stationed in the area, I still was not mentally prepared for the immense challenges I learned that my students faced. TFA’s mission calls for every student to have a teacher who cares for them and the furthering of their education. Every day I push my students to improve their literacy scores in hopes of limiting the amount of remedial work they must enroll in at college or even snatching a college scholarship! Messaging college as an achievable goal, my students have begun to see that this post-secondary option can be their future.

My Project

It is so easy to preach about pushing oneself to move on to college, but many of my students are bogged down from the lack of resources they must have to succeed. While others across the nation are able to attend ACT preparatory courses and hire tutors, my students can’t even afford to purchase writing utensils to complete their everyday homework. With this in mind, I would like to have pens and pencils readily available in my classroom the next school year. Teaching in the Arkansas Delta has opened my eyes to a level of poverty that I previously did not know existed in the United States. While some families in our area are thriving, most of my students are faced with obstacles like helping their parents keep the lights turned on or ensuring that running water flows through their faucets.

With your donation, my students will see that others across the nation are willing to push them toward achieving their goals.

No longer will I receive a tear-filled explanation about how an assignment was written in colored pencil because they could not find a working pen in their apartment. As a teacher, I am only able to donate so much to my classroom. Please show these students that others are determined to help them succeed and are rooting them on to victory in high school and beyond.
