Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in an inner city Title I school. 80% of the students in my school are eligible for free lunch. Many of the families of my students are economically disadvantaged and we have a real need for basic supplies.

Math and science are often intimidating to students. Science experiments, such as those in the book, keep the children interested. Science Reader's Theater is another way to keep children reading while learning about science at the same time. Of course pencils and erasers are fundamental necessities for math success. I use dry erase boards with the students for math. Each child has their own board, writes an answer and erases, ready for the problem. However, I'm out of the markers needed to use the boards.

Dry erase board markers will allow my student to continue to use the Dry Erase Boards as a math resource. The Teacher's books will give me ideas for experiments and allow me to review basic addition and subtraction with the children. Pencils, erasers and a sharpener are basic needs for teaching math, science and writing. Chalk will allow students to work out math problems on the chalk board. Colored chalk allows us to highlight different parts of the problem. Flip chart markers will allow students to make colorful charts writing and drawing their science observations. It will also allow me to make charts for the classroom.

Your generosity will make it possible for my students to learn science, math, reading and writing in a variety of ways to reach all learners. Due to severe cuts to the education budget, these supplies will not otherwise be available.
