Basic Necessities for Very Special, Very Deserving Kids

My Project

My students are my family for the 180 days a year that I have them in front of me. My goal is to provide them with a nurturing learning space; one where they feel safe, comfortable, and seen. And while I have been able to give them the best of myself, we are still desperately in need of appropriate learning materials.

My students are not performing on the same academic level as their peers in Middle School.

They require materials not normally found on these grade levels so they can truly get the type of instruction that will help them learn the skills required for a successful and productive life. We have a tremendously supportive administration, but the bottom line is, that there is no additional money to provide what is needed.

The Classroom Leveled Library is a resource that will help me teach reading. It is well organized and thorough, providing me enough variety to meet the multiple different levels of students who I teach. Kids deserve REAL BOOKS in their hands, reading on the computer all day doesn't help them. Which is why we need a classroom printer as well. Access to materials, and copies, on-demand, when students are in need, is so crucial to seizing opportunities for learning moments.

The snacks would also truly help my kids. This year, my class has to report to school at 8:00 am and they do not have lunch until 1:30 pm, daily. They are hungry and restless but do not have the means to supply themselves with snacks daily. Some days they are in the same classroom all day; snack time provides a social learning opportunity and a break where we can learn more about each other and build the types of connections that foster trust and learning.
