"Every little bit counts"- That quote has never been so true- A classroom not only runs with the big things like books, desks, and a teacher- but also those small details pencils, anchor charts, erasers, markers, projector remote, and even an easel. Those items help to make a successful classroom.
My students are in their first year at a turn around school.
They are students who have scored Below Basic consistently on state tests, and their school was considered one of the most dangerous last year. Their parents voted the district out last year, and our school in. They have a lot of adjustments to make, but are doing well. They see that we are here to help them achieve. They have new desks, new teachers, new rules, and new academic expectations. We are extremely focused on academics, there are large gaps in their skills that we are working to close. Many students who are in my 5th grade classroom are working on a first grade level. However, they have not once complained about the bumpy road we have been on together- they know we have a lot of work to do and are just happy to be in a place where someone actually cares that they learn and achieve.
My Project
The materials will help in various ways around our classroom. First, my students are very much so, economically disadvantaged so items likes pencils and erasers are needed on a daily basis, many of my students even ask to take these items home since they need them for their homework and do not have them there. The small easel will assist in our Guided Reading groups, which allows me to meet with a small group of children on more focused objectives to help them increase their reading levels. The projector remote will allow me to literally be in two places at once- I can move to the next slide and still monitor and assist students all over the classroom. The easel pads and markers will allow my students as well as myself to create anchor charts for our classroom- I have found that creating them specific to what we are doing in class helps much more with retention compared to store bought charts. Lastly, the timer will be used to monitor the duration of independent practice.
Having these items will improve instruction in my classroom.
Being able to provide my students with the "little things" just gives them that conformation that we care, and we are here to help them "learn and achieve". (one of my favorite lines from our code of conduct) One of the biggest hurtles my students had to cross this year was realizing that we were there to help them, and having the materials to do so shows them that it is all for real, as well as ALL for them.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
