My Students

My students are ready and eager to learn. We are a Title I school with 100% free and reduced price lunch. Our students come from a rural community with parents who want them to succeed and the best for them in life. My students are in first grade.

We enjoy learning in a nontraditional environment and using technology to explore the world around us.

My students are excited and love the opportunity to explore the world around them. They have been learning to work collaboratively and how to find solutions to real-world problems.

My Project

Reading is fundamental. Students who can read fluently do better in all academic areas. I have found that with my students those who struggle in reading excel in STEM projects. My goal is to help them to be more fluent in their sight words so they will be more fluent in reading. This will help them in all their subjects.

Students who struggle with reading benefit from multisensory learning.

In our classroom, we like to use many different ways to practice sight words. One way is to organize words by color. We move through colored levels and work toward mastering all of our sight words.

The materials in this project will help us to do that. We will use the file folders to hold materials for each level we are practicing. We use beads, pipe cleaners, flashcards, tactile letters, and playdough to practice sight words. By keeping them organized, we will be able to quickly access the words we are working on and then track our progress in a binder.

With students who are struggling with sight words, I work in a small group setting of 4 - 5 students. Each student has a binder and we keep track of the words they have learned. Once a word is mastered, they get to color in the gumball on their tracking sheet. Tracking sheets are kept in a binder by unit and tabbed off.
