My Students

My school services students from kindergarten through 5th grade. These students may be from the tiny borough of Bath in Pennsylvania, but they are BIG readers! We use a reading and writing program that revolves around the use of novels to create great readers and writers.

Reading interests can vary but they all have something in common- a mutual love for reading!

It's not uncommon to hear conversations comparing the writings of Kate DiCamillo to Katherine Applegate or other accomplished authors. When given the opportunity, children can develop love for and connection with great literature.

My Project

Students bond with characters that they can identify with in their books. One of those ways is through shared sports experiences. The students in grades 3-5 are always seeking these connections in order to immerse themselves in literature that connects with the things that they enjoy.

Elementary students play all kinds of sports--hockey, baseball, cheering, running, skateboarding, and more!

The books in this Donors Choose project include characters and events in a plethora of physical activities. They will gather interest as well as help students learn the ins and outs of their sports. It's possible that some students who are interested in beginning a sport will be compelled to join after reading one of these books. They can even branch out to lesser-known sports in our area like horseback riding, skateboarding, and surfing.

These books will be used to design reading challenges and create book displays that will build excitement around literature. They can be used to compare and contrast themes and characters and teach lessons that can be applied across many different areas.
