Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our class has 25 amazing children that are eager to learn, but we need your help. We are a Title I school located in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn and 100% of our students receive free lunch. 50% of our class comes to us with disabilities ranging from learning disabled to speech and language impairment. All of our students are highly motivated to learn, eager to come to school, and excited to be a part of our warm and nurturing environment.

Since 50% of the class is special needs as they need special attention.

Because of the importance of reading, much of the day in my classroom is spent on reading intervention where small group instruction is a necessity; however, without the proper materials, small group instruction can be demanding. It is hard to meet with a group of 5 students gathered around a group of desks and be accessible to each child. It is also hard for students to stay on task in this sort of situation, which makes improving students' reading skills more difficult. Being able to meet with our children in small groups at a kidney shaped table to give them extra personalized attention and help with their reading.

My Project

A kidney-shaped table will help to teach effectively because of its unique design. A group of five students can comfortably sit at an equal distance from the teacher. This will allow me to focus on all students while teaching the mini-lesson and monitor student progress as they work independently. Students will be able to engage in discussions and work in groups with their peers.

Every student has a unique combination of learning styles and intelligences he (she) depends on to learn new content.

It is important for me to acknowledge these differences and to differentiate instruction to meet their needs. Teaching in small groups empowers and opens up a world of possibility for my students. Something as small as a kidney-shaped table can make a huge difference.
