This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at our high school come from all over a large city in Pennsylvania and are vibrant, diverse and passionate. Some students travel over 2 hours on public transportation just to attend our school!
As the only urban high school in the country completely dedicated to agriculture, we are extremely unique.
Our students work many hours on our farm, with our animals, and landscaping our school grounds as part of their curriculum. Their dedication to our school and this field make them very special.
In my PE class, every single student participates. We do much more than the traditional sports units in our class, and students often find they excel in activities they didn't even know existed. My ultimate goal is for my students to understand the lifelong benefits of wellness and find an activity they enjoy enough to help them achieve this goal.
My Project
Introducing Drums Alive fitness into my PE program will be so exciting for my students. Since our school is very Agriculture focused, we do not have any type of music program. The Drums Alive fitness activity incorporates both physical activity and drumming routines that will allow students to combine two fun activities into one.
Drumming for fitness is a new non-traditional activity in PE that gets students burning calories without even knowing it!
I already have stability balls, which are the 'drums', but do not have any drumsticks to use on them. I plan to make Drums Alive a 2 week unit where students will learn different songs/workouts each day of the unit.
