Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our small Title I school sits at the base of the Manhattan Bridge, hidden among the ever-growing collection of luxury high rises overtaking Brooklyn's Flatbush Avenue.

My students are all recently arrived newcomers who have lived in the United States for less than 4 years and come from a wide variety of countries such as Guatemala, Haiti, Senegal, and Yemen.

As students work together on a project, you might hear them discussing in a variety of languages such as Haitian Creole, French, Arabic, Spanish, or Wolof. We see this diversity as an incredible opportunity, but one that sometimes needs additional support beyond what our public school budget can offer.

My Project

Our girls' soccer team practices at a city park without soccer goals making it challenging to mimic the feel of a real soccer field. These movable practice goals would be one way for us to get a bit closer to that experience while building foundational skills as a team.

Right now my players are working double-time to rebuild their team after seeing most of their teammates graduate during the pandemic and not having the opportunity to recruit our new students to play during a year of distance learning.

One way the girls try to build team unity is through small indicators, like wearing matching ribbons in their hair or singing songs together as they walk through the halls preparing for games. Matching sweatbands is just one more way our gals can show their sisterhood on the field and in the classroom---and just maybe it will encourage one more girl to join this incredible team and find some new friends in a time when togetherness feels more important than ever.
