My Students

I teach middle school band to over 360 6th, 7th, and 8th graders! My students come from so many walks of life, and they are brought together by the communal effort of learning to play an instrument and perform as a group. For many, band is a safe haven and a place they know they will be successful. It is also a place where many thrive even when they struggle in other ways in the building.

My band program provides opportunities for my students to learn and grow through music.

The skills they learn in band will serve them beyond their musical endeavors. Cooperation, teamwork, and getting their brains working in a way no other class can helps provide them with a well-rounded educational experience.

My Project

Managing hundreds of band students can be quite a task! We have discovered that having materials organized and things clearly labeled in the band room for all students to see helps to facilitate their ability to be self-sufficient and find things on their own. A sign to direct students, lamination sheets to preserve the things that are most often used, and school-approved command strips for hanging materials in the classroom will all aid in our organization effort!

This helps to keep a flow going in our classroom so that we can stay focused on making music.

When students know where to go to find things we do not need to stop rehearsal to help them. Keeping organized is key to a successful band program!
