This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Good day

These 3 items may seem like simple peanuts, but they will help us tremendously.

You might know that lawn mowers are a school vegetable and native plant garden's worst enemies. We recently had our 3 foot wide Coontie plant mowed down with Atala caterpillars and all despite its size and the mulch ring around it. We are hoping that making bamboo rings around our smaller plants will protect them against the weed whackers. We also made signs and talked to the assistant principal, but since it has happened more than once, we are going to build a barrier. The students decided that bamboo would be the most sustainable method.

As far as the measuring tapes: we do an activity in which the students estimate how tall the stratosphere is. They are given folding maps of Miami, hang a measuring tape on the wall above the map, and mark how tall several factors are, including where the greenhouse-containing stratosphere ends. The students often think it is significantly taller than it really is and it is an eye opening moment when they realize how thin and fragile this layer is.

We normally use metal measuring tapes for this, but, you know... eyeballs, spring loaded metal measuring tapes, and excitement: not a good mix. Vinyl measuring tapes will be much safer.

And we need tomato cages. Ours have seen better days.
