This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 22 second grade students and one fifth grade student that is a new arrival to the US and his younger brother is in my class. He is mine too because he is so below grade level, that he is learning to read in my classroom along with his brother. My students represent a Title I school located in south Glendale, California. Over half of our students are Hispanic, 29% are Armenian/White, and 8% are Filipino. Thirty-five percent of our students are ELLs and 68% are listed as economically disadvantaged.

My Project

With this grant, I will upgrade my 12-year old second grade classroom library to include a wide variety of books, magazines, book series, and poetry in a range of reading levels. The library will include lots of nonfiction material with photographs, maps, and charts full of interesting information. I've selected materials that will reflect the students’ life experiences, and values such as anti-bullying, gender and racial equity, and citizenship. As students increase their reading proficiency, they select higher level books. There is power in self selection to inspire reading, improve reading comprehension and literacy. Many students are not reading enough at home due to lack of books and poor internet connection or burn out of remote learning. It is my hope to provide real books students can borrow during remote learning to instill the love of reading. With physical books, students can read anywhere: at bedtime, at the kitchen table, etc., creating more opportunities to engage with literacy. Students will have access to rich literature in fiction and non-fiction will promote metalinguistic awareness and higher academic achievement for all students. This updated library will also provide texts that reflect and uplift the students’ life experiences and a broad range of cultures from around the world.
