My Students

Wonderful, diverse, and driven are three adjectives I would use to describe my students! I work with English Language Learners (ELLs) in second grade, which is approximately 30% of our school population.

My ELL students are happy, strong, and resilient.

Some have just arrived to the United States and are not only learning English but are also adjusting to a new culture. My ELL students work extremely hard. Some are literate in their first language and are emergent readers in English. All students are working on developing academic language, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

My Project

Having books on their level will decrease the learning gap while allowing students to connect their native language to English in reading! Students will work on their comprehension and decoding of new words.

ELL students need visual support and plenty of experiences with literature to actively learn English.

My students need to have many opportunities to books at their level. Through reading, students will be exposed to lots of new words that they have not used or heard before.

Many ELL students are reading below grade level, so a leveled library set of books will give students access to high-quality, engaging books with pictures to support their non-fiction reading skills.
