My Students

Our students come from twenty-six zip codes around Baltimore City. Our students are as diverse as our city is, making a community that is 66% African American, 27% White, 3% Hispanic/Latinx, 4% Asian or more than one race; approximately 45% come from families considered low-income.

There is no better way to bridge our divides than to have our diverse student community work together on common goals.

Our inner city middle school students need help funding the start up of their micro-economy which is a valuable part of their curriculum. This is a newly established program I am spearheading which builds on current student led fundraising efforts that finance important community building trips. To be successful fundraisers, my students must learn to consider each others' valuable perspective which is drawn from their own experiences.

My students are enthusiastic, creative, and motivated. They will do amazing things if given the resources, but being from an inner city public school, their resources are scant. They would be overjoyed for any help they get to begin their business!

My Project

My students are ambitious fundraisers! They are ready to do what is needed to fully fund their end of year trip on their own. They have many great ideas on how to accomplish that, but they need the basic equipment and supplies to make their magic. Items like a sewing machine and the notions that are needed for it will allow them to make crafts such as scarves, decorated towels and bags, and the ever-popular-making-a-comeback scrunchies for those VSCO girls! They are so lucky to have much baking equipment, but they still need a few more things like baking pans, and decorating equipment to make beautiful cupcakes for bake sales.

Many of our students do not have access to sewing machines, baking equipment, and other creative supplies.

This program not only gives them the experience of sewing, baking, and creating, it couples their creations with an end goal of earning their own funds for their end of the year school trip.

After learning basic home skills, they will calculate their costs and compare them with the profits they made from their fundraisers. Basically, they are learning the ins and outs of home economics with their micro business, from initial planning to creation, and finally assessing.
