My Students

Ladies and gentlemen, greet your partners with a bow. Prepare to dance the foxtrot. Ah, to see fifth graders demonstrating with grace and charm the ballroom dance skills we see weekly on television. We, too, want to "dance with our stars" but first they need to learn the basics of ballroom dance.

Our fifth grade students attend a New York City public school in the borough of Queens, one of the most diverse in the nation.

Our neighborhood is a microcosm of an international community and our global perspectives include an appreciation of the arts. Dance is highly regarded as an essential social skill that carries over into discipline and academic focus. Our families value this remarkable ballroom dance program and we all are very familiar with the hit television show, "Dancing With the Stars". Last year we were fortunate and received Donors Choose funding for this program. It was a huge success and when we had a dance for the children at the end of the year, they paired off and did the foxtrot, the Lindy, the waltz and the merengue. It was just a fabulous tribute to the program's success. Now we would love to bring the program back to our new fifth grade and establish a legacy for such an important arts program.

My Project

"Partners standing straight, with elbows in position. Four, five, let's begin.." Imagine fifth graders behaving like young ladies and gentlemen, gliding elegantly across the dance floor. The dance instructor gives the students their cues as they gracefully dance in perfect step. Each is mindful of the other's space and it is clear the group has acquired the appropriate etiquette. This is just one scenario we hope to bring to our students as the ballroom dance teaching artists of Dancing Classrooms work with us over a 10 week period in preparation for the citywide ballroom dance competition. We'll even have an interclass team competition so that all students can demonstrate the grace and finesse this dance program brings. Every student is a guaranteed success and that comes with the joy of dance and the ability to always participate. No wallflowers here. This is an inclusive program in which every child ultimately shares his and her exuberance.

This program will bring dance and lifelong skills to every student.

The challenge is to be able to afford ballroom dance this year, with a severely constrained budget. The only way we will be able to bring ballroom dance to our children is through this Donors Choose proposal. Its cost is simply beyond our financial means. In the past we have brought the joy of dance to our children who were transformed into young ladies and gentlemen. Please help us to fund this lifelong gift of dance.
